Agnès Varda

Belgian-born French director Agnès Varda (1928–2019) was completely unique, blending genres, styles and techniques across different themes. After studying art history and working as a still photographer, she directed her first film in 1955. Her breakthrough came with the proto–Nouvelle Vague film Cléo de 5 à 7. Swedish quality film distributor NonStop Entertainment now represents (with a few exceptions), the entire Varda catalogue in the Nordic countries, feature and short films, both fiction and documentary – for example the short documentary Black Panthers (1968).

Malmsten Hellberg were commissioned to design posters for each of the 39 films for screenings and programmes. The image of each poster is a carefully selected still that retains the ratio from the original film and the posters are colour coded after genre. Each film title has its own typeface from 205TF (as in Type Foundry and Typographie Française). A limited edition companion zine, with additional stills, was printed at Newspaper Club and a folder for the posters was printed at Norrmalms kartongfabrik.
